DEEP SURFACES
David French – Lakefield
My spiritual world in interpretative representational images of special places and people. Acrylic paintings on board.
Artist Biography
David French's artistic endeavours began during his days as an undergraduate at university. Ever since, art has been the primary manner in which he has attempted to address the world around him. At certain times, it has been a main pursuit, while at others, it has taken a backseat to various competing interests. For the past several years, painting has begun to overwhelm all other endeavours.
Working in acrylics and watercolours, the final paintings are a synthesis of three differing sources of influence. The first are the actual people he knows and places he has been. The second are the conceptual ideas that inform his particular view of reality. And finally the third is other art.
For over twenty years, David has had his art displayed in numerous public galleries throughout the country. He has been the artist-in-residence at Trent University and with the Anglican Foundation. In 2005, he won the Best in Show in the Society of Canadian Artists annual juried exhibition. More recently, he has had images published with the Willisville Mountain Project and the Canadian Landscape Exhibition. David lives in Young's Point, Ontario.

Artist’s Statement
Representational art, if it wants to maintain its essentially reverential character, must look out over all of reality with the idea that, if it exists, it is a worthwhile subject matter.
But to be human is to live in the world as it is and the world as it is imagined. You exist within the confines of the physical universe while simultaneously striving to venture beyond your senses. While it is immeasurable, intangible and indescribable, there is a second plane to human existence that works on us whether we are conscious of it or not.
To me, the essence of any successful artistic endeavour lies in its capacity to address both of these realities -- what is seen and what is sensed.
