Richard Hayman

Biography

Richard was born in India, educated in Mill Hill School in England, and graduated from the University of Toronto with a B.A. in Fine Arts.

For 25 years Richard was the Director of the Art Programme at Lakefield College School where he developed a studio programme that was recognized as one of the best in the country. For nine years Richard also led an accredited summer art school in Florence and Sienna Italy.

In 1992, Richard left Lakefield College School to pursue a career as a full-time portrait painter. His portraits can be seen in corporate offices boardrooms, private homes and educational institutions internationally.

He has worked and exhibited professionally in an exceptionally wide variety of media; drawing, pastels, oil painting, watercolour, etching, stoneware and porcelain ceramics.

With a gift for capturing personality on canvas, Richard works with people of all ages and from all walks of life.

Richard’s artistic ability allows him to capture the spirit and essence of his subject and not just a good likeness. He provokes the powerful and individual personality of each of his subjects in their own milieu. Client and artist work as a team to create a timeless composition in oil.

Richard’s portraits of children give parents an opportunity to break away from the portrait stereotype and receive in its place a highly personalized and individualized moment in time. His paintings offer an unabashed nostalgia for the innocence and simplicity of childhood.

His portraits preserve a spontaneous moment in time and he tries to find that gesture, expression, or pose that reminds the viewer of that individual’s personality, humanity and integrity.

Richard’s style is uncompromisingly naturalistic, but is tempered with an admiration for the impressionist’s love of colour and light. His teachers and influences, however are all of the Old Masters, and especially the portraiture of artists like Rembrandt, Delacroix, Monet and Andrew Wyeth.

Richard is the Director of The Art School of Peterborough in downtown Peterborough, Ontario. In 1993, Richard founded this school where he and others offer instruction in all the visual arts.
