PASTELS AND PIXELS
Our Diverse Views of our World
Jennifer Ross and Gordon Ross – Port Perry
The traditional warmth and finesse of soft pastel is partnered with the hi-tech nuances of digital imagery.

Jennifer and Gordon Ross
Jennifer and Gordon Ross are married artists who live in a renovated mid-1800’s pioneer farmhouse near Port Perry. Their beautiful gallery and studio is in an adjacent building on their property.
They both pursued careers in industry and developed their artistic techniques over the years in their free time. It is only in ‘retirement’ that they have been exhibiting their art publicly.
While their appreciation of aesthetics and powers of observation are very similar in daily life, their interpretation of these observations into their diverse media is dramatically different.
They have many other compelling interests besides art. Jennifer is an accomplished cook and fervent gardener. Gordon is a cabinetmaker and long-time restorer of classic British sports cars. Both are, by necessity, involved in property maintenance and DIY.

Jennifer Ross – Artist’s Statement
I work exclusively in dry pastel. My paintings are generally of a moderate size, but also include miniatures. One subject that I find of particular interest is the spontaneity and character of older villages and towns, especially those in the United Kingdom and Europe. I love the discipline of detail and perspective.
I also enjoy painting animals, gardens, landscapes and the rural environment in which I live. My paintings have been accepted in numerous shows and are in private collections in Australia, Great Britain, the United States and Canada.
I have also portrayed many a beloved pet and cherished home in commissioned works.

Artist’s Statement – Gordon Ross
This is a unique art form that brings dimensional life to images of everyday objects and offers a new and intriguing way of observing and appreciating the objects around us.
I have developed a creative a process that brings unexpected depth and beauty to the normal flatness of realistic images. I was inspired by the varying distance-related tonal and dimensional graduations of landscapes to synthesize the effect and apply it to small, tangible objects.
My approach to each subject is unique, and so each work is truly an original, and is signed and dated as such. There is no single image file to create a piece. Rather, the “one-off” picture is assembled from a series without copies.
Similar groups of images may be melded using different protocols to form diverse and varied art works.
My works are usually of the Still Life genre, being generally of inanimate objects. However, my portfolio also includes a number of animal portraits.
Although a relatively new art form, my Photo Perspectives have already won acclaim.
