"Weaving in Silk - Nancy Newman

About the Artist Nancy has always had an affinity for the textile side of art. She previously ran a company designing and manufacturing her own line of children's clothing. She had a retail store called "We Did It" which was located on the Danforth in Toronto, Ontario. Nancy then decided what would make her happy would be to go back to school.
In 2003 she graduated from Sheridan College with honours and several awards for her work. Nancy weaves using silk as she loves the luxurious feel and look of it. At first she worked in the natural colour, but now is hand dying her silk with extraordinary results. She makes shawls, scarves and some delightful little handbags.

Artist Statement
I am captivated by the process of weaving silk by hand, and have explored its capabilities both as a textile, and as a material for sculptural work. My approach is minimalist in nature and demands intimacy and a kind of commitment both from the viewer and myself.
Working with a computer driven 16-harness dobby loom, I call on traditional weaves that connect me to the past, and add a distinction and complication that only new technology allows, while remaining firmly within the hand made realm. Silk is eloquent, if only we stop to listen.
My work embodies these notions of humility and simplicity; of strength and beauty; of clarity and calm.
